This is really old but doesn't appear to have been answered: my 2000 Echo takes a 12pt 30mm socket on the axle nut. It'll take over 200 lb-ft torque to loosen so do it before you raise the car, wheel still on the ground, E-brake on, jack in place ready to lift. The main trick is to push out the old bearings and press in the new ones without damage.

Sounds like a bad wheel bearing to me. Usually, the noise is louder when turning one way when the weight of the car is shifted onto the bad part. Grinding, vibration, rubbing sounds are all indicative, as is dependence on speed. However, it could be the CV as well. That usually has a clicking/clunking when turning one way more than the other.

Finally getting around to putting my car back together after replacing the clutch disc with the right one, and today I noticed that my wheels wouldn't turn with the axel nut fully torqued. I backed the axle nut off and they turned just fine. When I put the car back together after the swap, I used new driveshafts that I purchased on Vortex.

Replace the entire axle, or rebuild/regrease/install a new boot? If you are just doing a boot, or rebuilding either the inner or outer CV joint, then just pop it out of the transmission, and disconnect the hub assembly from the car. (I think you're just about there, just need to remove the ball joint). Mine was stuck on my car, like REALLY stuck.

The good thing is it's a 9" so at least the axle will stay in the housing and the wheel "should" stay in place. I agree it is a dangerous situation when an axle breaks, the car is going to make a move to whichever side breaks. If he is going to run slicks and launch the car hard then the stock 40 year old 28 spline axles are going to break.

Or, one can use two Gr 8 washers and a Gr 8 nut. Lube the threads and the two washers. Place new stud into flange. Place two washers onto new stud. Thread onto the new stud, the nut. Use the nut to 'pull' the new stud into place. Repeat four more times to finish axle. Pepeat for the other side/axle.

If you wanted to build a under 3000 pound trailer, what is a good car or truck axle to start with? I have noticed some 2wd Ford F350, F450 or F550 have a one piece front axle that drops down inboard from the spindles. If I could find one of them with spindles, wheels & tires that might be a good start. The bad side might be how much it weighs.
