Recently I cleaned 2 tanks at my job. They were neglected for decades. Tons of mold and bacteria. Anyways I cleaned both the same way. I took out the coolant, cleaned the tank, ran cleanall through the system and then put fresh coolant in. Well it appears I didnt do a good enough job on one of them as there is black film on top of the coolant.
Inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi in your machine-tool reservoir to improve coolant effectiveness and eliminate the cause of foul odors. Add this low-ing formula to coolant for use during operation or when the machine is shut down for complete maintenance. It cannot be sold outside the United States due to product registration requirements.
Understandably, you can't empty the coolant tank, clean it, and add a fresh mixture every week, but using a filter is almost as effective. ... Too many machinists and machine shops take their CNC coolant for granted, and as a result, it has become one of the most overlooked components in a machining operation. I was going to buy a manual pump to pump from the barrel to the coolant tank but, after looking at the flow rates of the pumps and how much labor was involved, I decided I would just use a length of hose and siphon the coolant into the tank. The Siphon worked well and I had 30 gallons in the coolant tank in no time. Then I noticed the leak.
Dying from lung problems related to coolant is a long slow process much like emphysema. There are better ways to go. Coolant is made into extremely small droplets so that it disperses evenly and so that it gets into the joint between the tool and the work. Coolant droplets are like smoke particles and can linger as long or longer than smoke does.

While I've been working on the machine, the auto lubrication system has been working every few minutes putting way lube into the tank without coolant to float on. Having set the Filtermist tramp oil remover going it has transferred an inch depth into a 1 gallon drum in the last hour or so, and the small visible coolant surface is now looking ...

Trying to cool the coolant lower than room temp creates displacement problems with the machine tool. The other option is to heat up the coolant. They can measure the maximum temp rise and then buy a tank heater and set it to that temp. But they will need to keep the coolant circulating as much as possible in order to keep the machine slides warm.
As soon as a machine would sit for any period of time the coolant would start to smell. I think it has something to do with bacteria forming in the coolant because the oil that settles on the top cuts off the air supply to the coolant. Our solution was to switch to Hankserfers. It never smells and is a much better coolant in my opinion.
Bacterial and fungal contamination in your coolants cause foul odors, reduce CNC coolant life, create health concerns (dermatitis). Sump Soda® Coolant Conditioner is a simple, convenient and professional-strength, tank-side microbiostat coolant additive for fresher, cleaner-smelling and much longer-lasting machine coolants.
