The second option is to remove all fish in the same manner and use your tank to wash the gravel while it's still in the fish tank. It will stir up so much detritus you can't even see your hands anymore. Make sure it's all floating in the water and then remove 40 to 50% of the water. Fill it up with new water, wait till it's all settled ...

Clean the gravel with a siphoning kit twice a month. A siphoning kit, or gravel cleaner, looks like a clear tube with a hose attached to it. Place the clear tube into the water and put the hose in a bucket. Shake the plastic tube up and down to start siphoning the water and dip the end of the clear tube into the gravel itself.

The part of the road shared by others has had minor wash boarding that I would fix every four years or so by ripping the gravel up with the teeth on the box blade. After bringing the gravel back up I would smooth it back down. I have seen gravel that was compacted that did not wash board as easy but it still is getting pot holes. Later, Dan

Grab a clean cup, preferably an oldskool metal vessel (as it won't ever break), and go for it. Here's how: Prep the scenery. Unplug all submerged electric devices. Clean your hands. Grab the cup and fill it up carefully with the gravel patch you wish to wash. Place the gravel into a metal sift and wash it thoroughly under running water.
